Call for speed humps following Virginia crash

Durban North residents call for speed humps after crash at circle.

THERE has been renewed calls for speed humps after an accident in Virginia Circle. On Sunday night, a man in his 50s crashed his Ferrari into the rockery display causing the high-end luxury vehicle to land on its roof. The driver, who had to be freed from the wreckage, is still in a critical, but stable condition.

This has prompted Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, as well as residents, to call for speed humps on the lower half of the Mackeurtan Avenue.

“There has been a number of accidents at the bottom of Mackeurtan Avenue as you enter the circle. Several residents have been calling for speed humps for a while now and this accident highlights the need for them on this stretch. One of the reasons the display was put up was to beautify the circle. In recent times however, there has been several accidents where cars have crashed into it.

“I’ve sent an email to the head of the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to review the decision not to place speed calming measures along this road towards the bottom near the circle. This would help prevent a number of future accidents and in my opinion is an engineered solution to poor driver behaviour experienced on this road,” he said.

Ryley added because of an absence of adequate enforcement speed humps were seen as a solution.
