Plant fair set to bloom in Durban North

Learn all about your favourite exotic and indigenous plants at the annual fair.

CALLING all green-thumbed plant enthusiasts to attend the annual Fairway Orchid and Rare Plant Show to be held in Durban North in August.

Orchids, staghorns, cycads, succulents, palm trees, bonsais, tillandsias, heliconias, nepenthes and aloes are just some of the flora that people can expect to buy and see at the fair.

Members of the public will also have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the beautiful blooming orchids of The Natal Orchid Society (NOS) on the day.

“Four potting and mounting demonstrations will be held throughout the day – and experts at hand – to help dispel some of the myths surrounding owning this exotic plant. These demonstrations were very well-attended last year with a vast amount of information shared on how to tend and look after the orchids, ” said Melanie van Greunen, organizer of the second fair and vice-president of the NOS.

“Understanding the natural conditions in which the orchid grows, is critical to understanding what the orchid needs for its care,” she added.

Specimens will be on sale and some will even be given away as raffle prizes. Guests will also be able to visit the tea garden, where they will be able to buy tea, coffee, cake and light lunches.

“This event is for young and old; for all plant enthusiasts to enjoy a relaxed day in a beautiful setting. The venue is also wheelchair-friendly,” said Van Greunen.

The fair is open to the public on Saturday, 6 August, from 9am until 4pm at 118 Fairway, Durban North. Entrance costs R15 per person. Children under 12 get in free. For further information contact Melanie van Greunen on 083 456 0178 or 031 563 7102.
