Fire rips through informal settlement

The fire ripped through the Mysore Road informal settlement on Friday night.

AT least thirty families have been left homeless after several shacks were destroyed by a raging fire at an informal settlement on Mysore Road in Kenville on Friday night. The incident occurred at about 8pm.

According to Netcare 911 media liaison officer, Athlenda Mathe, there were no fatalities on scene.

“There were no injuries or fatalities reported and the cause of the blaze is not yet known. About thirty shacks were burnt down. It took firefighters at least two hours to put out the fire. Those left homeless have been accommodated at  a local community hall,” she said.

Last year, 400 shacks were destroyed in a fire at an informal settlement on Gumtree Road, also in Kenville.
