Prisoners flood Durban North cells
The prisoners are awaiting deportation after being arrested for entering the country illegally.
PRISONERS being held at the Durban North SAPS have flooded their cells for a second time in a week, demanding their release. The prisoners, who are being detained as illegal immigrants, are currently waiting for the Department of Home Affairs to process them in order to deport them.
According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, the prisoners have flooded the cells twice this week.
“They’ve used the blankets given to them and soap bars and shoved them into the toilet bowels, blocking the pumps. Some of them shoved the blankets deep into the pipe, causing the water to rise to the surface and flood the cells. We’ve had to get plumbers out to retrieve the items. At the moment it is costing the station money because they are damaging infrastructure. We’ve been told the Department of Home Affairs will arrive on Friday to begin the deportation,” he said.
