Hit-and-run suspect in court today

Police say the Sunningdale resident was arrested after she had taken her damaged car to a local panel beater.

THE 37-year-old woman who was arrested in connection with last week’s hit-and-run accident at the M4 on-ramp near Blue Lagoon is set to appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court today.

According to police spokesperson, Maj Thulani Zwane, the Sunningdale resident was arrested after she took her damaged vehicle to a local panel beater.

“The suspect claimed that she had knocked an unknown object, however, the panel beater recognised the model and colour of the car as the one identified by one of the crash victims and called the police,” he said.

Police made the arrest on Tuesday and she was detained at the Durban Central Police Station. Her vehicle has also been impounded.

On Wednesday last week, Sumeer Maharaj (26) and Praven Mahabir (25) came to the aid of their friend, Junaid Singh (28), who had been forced to stop at the M4 on-ramp near Blue Lagoon due to a flat tyre. The trio was busy changing the vehicle’s tyre when a speeding vehicle crashed into them.

Maharaj was declared dead at the scene while Mahabir died early the next morning. Singh escaped with only a broken hand. Family and friends soon turned to social media with a desperate plea for any witnesses to come forward. Singh claimed that driver fled the scene in a black Kia Koup.

The woman has been charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving as well as failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
