Community spirit evident at #CleanBlueLagoon initiative

Organizer says he was blown away by the support shown by residents in clean-up.

MORE than 200 bags of rubbish were collected on Saturday for the #CleanBlueLagoon clean-up. The clean-up which took place on Blue Lagoon Beach saw around 70 passionate Durbanites rally together to pick up thousands of pieces of rubbish which was littered across Durban’s beaches after the heavy rains recently.

Dale Johnson, who began the initiative said he was blown away by the support shown by residents.

“Initially we had settled on cleaning Beachwood Beach but after its closure due to medical waste being dumped there we settled on Blue Lagoon Beach. When the city decided to reopen the beach on Friday, it was too late to change the venue back to Beachwood on our Facebook page.

“I’m just blown away by the support and passion of the people here today. I’m incredibly grateful and hope to see this kind of community spirit continue. I think this an even bigger turnout than we had last week,” said Johnson.

Around 80 per cent of rubbish collected was made up of plastic bottles and polystyrene.
