Northwood beats Kearsney in wet encounter

Northwood record yet another impressive victory over Highway based school.

FAR from being a damp squib, Northwood School’s first hockey team came up against Kearsney College on a wet and miserable weekend. However, the Knights were full of confidence after wins against Durban High School (DHS) and Glenwood Boys’ High School. They took on the might of the Highway-based schools, beating them by a narrow margin of 2-1.

Matt Fairweather, coach of the team said his team played extremely well under pressure.

“The game started off at high intensity with Northwood under a lot of pressure. After the first 10 minutes we picked up the intensity and scored a well-worked short corner. Josh Cowell’s drag flick was well-saved by the Kearsney keeper but Cody Van Bremen got on the end of it to tap in for the first goal,” he said.

Before the end of the first half, however, Kearsney was awarded a short corner and converted it from slip flick into the bottom corner.

The start of the second half was played very well from Northwood with some great play – pressure from the Northwood boys and a goal being disallowed by the umpires, which was the right decision.

In the last five minutes of the game Northwood were awarded a short corner which was excellently taken by Josh Cowell who after a low and powerful drag flick scored, to take the lead and win the game 2-1.
