Armed men easily derail gate

A domestic worker and the daughter of a homeowner in La Lucia were held up at gunpoint this week.

A GANG of armed robbers held up a domestic worker and a resident at gunpoint in La Lucia on Wednesday morning.

Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, said the gang of four robbers had derailed the driveway gate of a property in Wilden Place at around 10.40am.

“The robbers gained access through the front door and held up the maid and the resident’s adult daughter at gunpoint and locked them in a bedroom. The robbers fled with cash from the safe, a laptop, a DVR system, an iPhone and the family’s vehicle,” he said.

“In their haste to flee the scene, they left behind in the garden a flat-screen television that they had taken from the lounge,” he said. Durban North SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Jackson said armed robberies had spiked across the city in recent weeks with several incidents reported at business and residential premises in Pinetown, Westville, Crestholme and the CBD.

“We advise residents to install an anti-gate-crashing kit to their alarm systems as this effective device will sound the alarm the moment anyone tampers with the gate and give you more time to get to safety and call for help. It also acts as a deterrent and an early warning system, enabling armed response officers to react swiftly to the scene,” he said.
