New look set for uMhlanga clinic

Currently the public is forced to brave the elements as they wait to receive attention or treatment.

THE mobile clinic at the Village Green in uMhlanga Rocks in set to undergo a revamp. The Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) said the purpose of the revamp was to improve services offered at the clinic.

Currently, the busy facility, which caters to a cross-section of the community, from the elderly to moms with babies, provides limited shelter – leaving its users exposed to the elements as they wait to receive attention or treatment.

What’s more, on a daily basis staff and patients also have to suffer through ‘stifling heat’ inside the clinic.

“On any given day we can have up to 20 people outside the clinic, and this includes mothers with small babies, who have to wait in the sun, wind or rain, with limited seating and uneven, often muddy ground,” explained uMhlanga Rocks UIP operations manager Dewet Geldenhuys.

The renovations will include the erection of 32 square metres of awning outside of the clinic to provide shelter, 50 square metres of paving and edging to create an even surface (on which four new waiting benches will be placed), planting of 320 square meters of lawn as well as the installation of air-conditioning units.

“This may be a small project but it will make a huge difference to those who need to make use of this facility,” said Geldenhuys.
