Civilians shot during cash-in-transit heist

Members of the public were caught in a hail of bullets as the heavily armed suspects opened fire outside a shopping centre north of Durban.

AT least four people have been injured during a daring cash-in-transit heist at the Whitehouse Shopping Centre in Phoenix less than an hour ago.

Reports from the scene alleged that the heavily armed suspects opened fire on the security guards as they carried out the daring heist. Several of the shoppers were caught in the cross-fire.

The suspects are said to have fled towards Old North Coast Road and are still at large.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), one of the injured shoppers suffered massive blood loss after he sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh.

The victim fled the hail of bullets shortly after being shot. He stopped his vehicle in Glen Anil, where a passing motorist is said to have come to his aid.

He was reportedly stabilised at the scene before being transported to hospital in a serious condition.

Two boxes containing an undisclosed amount of cash, a bullet-proof vest and a firearm were allegedly stolen from one of the security officers.
