Hiccups reported in voting registration process

Ward councillors report on some of the issues experienced during this morning's registration campaign.

HUNDREDS of residents across the province have descended onto their nearest voting stations since 8am today to ensure that they are registered on the voters’ roll for the 2016 Local Government Elections.

However, Durban North and uMhlanga ward councillors Shaun Ryley and Heinz de Boer said some residents have experienced some hiccups during this morning’s campaign.

Approximately 17 people gave up on registering at the North Crest Primary School as there was only one official posted at the station, said Ryley.

What’s more, a number of people were also turned away from the Chelsea Preparatory School station as officials were demanding proof of residence .

Ryley assured the community that this was not a registration requirement stipulated by the IEC.

“I urge the community to alert me should they arrive at a voting station where officials are demanding proof of residence. This is not needed to register,” he said.

De Boer said there was massive confusion at the Sunningdale Pre Primary School after the IEC moved the station to the Sunningdale Park without prior warning.

“There were no signs left at the school to alert voters to the new location. About 20 to 30 people were left in total confusion until we were able to determine the new location. We had to place notices at the school to alert other potential voters,” he said.

Anyone unsure of the location of his or her voting station is urged to contact his or her ward councillor. Residents can also check to see if they are registered by SMSing their ID number to 32810.

One of the Durban North residents who successfully managed to register was 91-year-old Walter Eastman.

He said the country had reached a critical point in history where residents were obligated to register and vote.
