Lack of speed humps a growing concern
Local resident questions whether the city cares about saving pedestrian lives around Gateway and New Town Centre areas.
THE removal of speed humps around Gateway and New Town Centre has prompted safety concerns with one resident saying there has been an increase in speeding and reckless driving. The resident, who spoke to Northglen News this week, said it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality in the area. Umesh Jivan, a pracitsing attorney on Millennium Boulevard, said there is growing concern regarding the lack of speed calming in the area.
“Since the speed bumps were lifted in December, we’ve had three accidents on the corner of Millennium Boulevard and Equinox Road alone. By creating this free flow, people now have to play a dangerous game at every pedestrian crossing. uMhlanga and this precinct in particular is marked as mixed used development and I think that pedestrian safety should be of paramount importance.
Jivan said he was particularly concerned about a children’s park that had been recently opened near his offices.
“So many children use the park on a daily basis after school and I’m also worried about their safety when they are trying to cross the road. We pay some of the highest rates and the lack of interest is an indictment of the municipality. I think the ETA does have a role to play, especially around Gateway and New Town Centre, which is more pedestrian orientated. I believe fixed speed calming is the only engineering solution to this,” he said.
