Durban festive season in full swing

Thousands of locals and visitors enjoyed Durban's sunny beaches over the Christmas weekend.

DURBAN beaches were buzzing over the Christmas weekend with what the Municipality has described as a “generally well-behaved crowd.”

The city’s Festive Season Management Committee (FESMAC) reports that between 24 December and 27 December, more than 483 923 people flocked to the varius city beaches. A total of 55 people experienced difficulty in the water and were rescued by lifeguards.  A total of 2936 people received first aid treatment for various medical reasons, most of which were blue bottle stings and minor cuts.

A person died in a stabbing incident on Mahatma Gandhi Road. Police are currently investigating the matter.

Approximately 18 338 armbands were issued to children who visited the beach.  About 109 children were separated from their guardians but were later reunited with their families. As of this morning (Tuesday, 29 December), one child is still at the place of safety where lost children are kept. The child is in the care of social workers.

Approximately 177 989.14 tons of waste were collected. The Chairperson of FESMAC, Sibusiso Mkhwanazi, commended the Durban Solid Waste team for their outstanding work in ensuring visitors enjoyed themselves in a clean and safe environment.

Festivities are still continuing in Durban, with more people expected to arrive in the City for New Year celebrations. Beachgoers are advised to only swim in designated areas and to co-operate with lifeguards. Beachgoers are advised to adhere to all the rules and by-laws of the City.
