Concern over Durban North sinkhole

Local residents says massive sinkhole could cause serious accident.

A HUGE sinkhole on the corner of Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) and Tyne Place is causing great concern for residents and for drivers. The hole which appeared yesterday is approximately five feet deep.  On Tuesday afternoon, one man, believed to be a car guard, tried to intervene by warning motorists about the dangerous hole, however, according to the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page, several drivers swore and hooted at the man not knowing what he was doing.

A sinkhole, also known as a cenote, is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer.

One resident, Linda Berardi, said she was concerned about the massive depression.

“It is sagging and has become dangerous to travel on. There is currently an orange cone and white squares spray painted around the hole but there is no one fixing it. I understand today is a holiday but something has to be done soon or their will be a serious accident. My concern is that someone will drive into it at night. It’s not nearly as visible at night time,” she said.
