One dead after high-speed chase and shoot-out in uMhlanga

Two more suspects were arrested by the Durban North SAPS.

A SUSPECT has been killed following a high-speed chase and shoot-out between between four men armed with pistols and members from the Durban North SAPS. The suspects, in their haste to evade police, went down Kikembe Drive, which is still under construction, before losing control and crashing their vehicle, a white BMW, into a ditch. Two suspects were arrested just a mere 300 metres away from the scene, while a fourth is still on the loose.

The vehicle was also found with a false set of plates and Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the local station.

“Our Field Unit was on a routine patrol when they spotted the vehicle on Chartwell Drive. The occupants were acting suspiciously and the members checked the plates of the car, which came up as false. They put on their emergency lights and attempted to pull the suspects over.

“The suspects however, sped off and a high-speed chase ensued. They opened fire on police in Umhlanga Rocks Drive and attempted to evade them by taking what they thought was a shortcut and ended up crashing their vehicle. The suspects and the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee on foot, but two of them were arrested 300 metres away from the scene,” Deokaran said.

The third suspect who was found in the car, was shot multiple times through the upper torso, was fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The suspects threw their firearms out the window on Ncondo Place. The K9 Dog Unit is still searching for the fourth suspect, who disappeared into the dense sugar cane fields around the construction site.

Members of the Field Unit escaped the shoot-out unscathed.
