Community nabs remote jammer in Glenashley

The suspect was arrested after his getaway driver sped off without him.

A REMOTE-JAMMING suspect met his match yesterday afternoon when two members of the community apprehended him in Glenashley.

The suspect was allegedly caught after he and an accomplice attempted to steal an Isuzu bakkie at the Almil Centre on Ashley Avenue.

The owner of the vehicle is said to have attempted to ‘arm’ his vehicle before entering the pharmacy, but when the car would not activate he grew suspicious.

“While he was inside the pharmacy, the suspect realised that the motorist had seen him. The suspect then ran towards a getaway car, which was parked at the robots. The accomplice drove away without him,” said Tyron Powell of Marshall Security.

Powell said the owner of the targeted vehicle, as well as the manager of one of the restaurants at the centre, chased after the suspect and apprehended him.

Reaction officers of the security company arrived soon after and assisted with the citizen’s arrest until SAPS arrived. The suspect was handed over to Durban North SAPS for further investigation.

According to Powell, they responded to a call regarding a similar attempt in the same area earlier that day.

“To avoid becoming a victim of remote-jamming, motorists are urged to be extremely vigilant when parking their cars and to double-check that their vehicles are definitely locked at all times. They should also refrain from leaving valuables in view inside their cars. Locking all items in the boot and make ensure that the boot is definitely locked before walking away from the car,” he added.

In July, the centre was also struck by a counterfeit cash scamming duo. One of the suspects successfully duped the staff at one of the stores at the centre while the second was caught out by a money scanner.
