Durban North student caught in protest action
The proposed hike in university fees rocking university campuses around the country is having a devastating impact on the lives of students.
A DURBAN North resident studying at the University of Cape Town (UCT), one of the universities at the the epicentre of the fees hike protests, found herself in deep trouble yesterday when police arrested her. The picture of Lile Thate emerged on Twitter late yesterday afternoon.
It showed the Durban North resident being flung into the back of a van by police. In the Twitter post, her sister Fenste said that Lile’s wrist was twisted and that she was ‘choked’. She said her sister had to be rushed to hospital.
Students across the country are protesting the proposed 10.5 per cent hike proposed for next year’s tuition fees. The protests started at Wits University and have since spread across the county to the campuses of Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Students from the University of Fort Hare have also joined in the protest action. Yesterday a proposal was made to cap the increase at six per cent, which the #FeesMustFall movement also rejected, citing that a lot of students would still not even be able to afford that increase.
