Dachshund Haven in dire need

An influx of abandoned animals have shocked and concerned animal activist, Lakota Schultz, one of four passionate directors of the organisation

The Dachshund Haven, an animal rescue organisation based in Durban North has, in recent weeks, noticed an alarming influx of abandoned pets.

The NPO, which focuses on the rehabilitation and re-homing of dachshunds have, received 22 surrendered dogs in three days alone. In other cases owners have simply opted to move homes and have left their pets to fend for themselves.

“We also often assist the elderly where the husband or wife passed on or they are forced to move into a retirement home, where they can no longer properly care for their pets or are not allowed to keep them at their new homes. These situations are heartbreaking. One lady kept phoning me about her dog that we re-homed. She was so worried about him and you could tell that she missed him. Now the new family sends her regular photos and updates,” said Lakota Schultz, one of four passionate directors of the organisation.

According to Schultz this influx poses a major problem for the organisation, as it is difficult to re-home adult dogs.

“People only want puppies. It often takes us months to find a home for the animals. We also vet our adoptees and perfectly match them with their animals. People think they can simply demand a dog and that is that, but we make sure that the family and the home environment matches the dog and his temperament,” she said.

The NPO is also desperate to find more foster homes. These homes need to provide a loving, caring and calm environment where abused and traumatised dachshunds can be rehabilitated and socialised.

“All we need are dedicated people who are willing to volunteer their home and attention to these animals. We will provide the food and cover the medical expenses of the animals while they are in foster care,” explained Schultz.
