Rampant drag racing in uMhlanga

Speedsters have been causing havoc and accidents are increasing.

THE disregard for municipal by-laws has spiraled out of control in uMhlanga Ridge. That’s according to Dean O’Brian, security manager of the Ridge Management Association.

He said drag racing along Meridian Drive and Umhlanga Ridge Boulevard was angering residents. What’s more, illegal parking and failure to stop at stop signs have also become rampant in the area. During the interview with the  the Northglen News, O’Brian witnessed several speedsters and law-breakers along Meridian Drive.

“In addition to being a general nuisance to the public, the activity is also putting their lives at risk. The amount of accidents in the area is alarming and constantly increasing,” he said.

According to O’Brian, the association has received a significant number of complaints from residents but has received little support from council or Metro Police.

“For months we have been fighting to have traffic calming measures, such cameras or speed bumps, installed, but the interest just isn’t there. Metro Police has also told us that they do not have enough resources or manpower to patrol the area. The only roads that they are actually spotted being policed are Palm Boulevard and Aurora Drive. I have told them that the area would be a goldmine for them in terms of traffic fines, but again there are only excuses,” said O’Brian.
