Aggression peaks among Broadway vagrants

When authorities arrived at the scene to arrest the aggressive and alleged intoxicated culprit he reportedly lunged at the security guard with a rock.

THE problem of vagrants on Swapo (Broadway) Road spiraled out of control last week when one of the men who frequent the area attacked two other car guards along the busy roadway.

For months residents have been plagued by verbal abuse and intimation of violence from the vagrants who pose as car guards.
The men have also been accused of drinking and urinating in public.

When authorities arrived at the scene to arrest the aggressive and alleged intoxicated culprit he reportedly lunged at the security guard with a rock.

“They are in your face and extremely intimidating. When people refuse to give them tips they threaten them with physical violence. I have also seen them fighting for territory, chasing each other with sticks,” said Andrew Wood of the Durban North-Umhlanga CP.

There have also been reports that the vagrants have begun stealing vehicles’ hubcaps on the busy urban road. “Female restaurant staff have also been receiving unwanted sexual attention and advances from the ‘car guards’,” he added.

Similar reports of harassment and substance has also been reported by residents and business owners on Newport Ave, near the Glenashley Post Office.

“We are having a major issue with homelessness and begging in the area. What is worse is that the Municipality does not seem to have ant contingency plan to assist these individuals and it is compounded to become aggressive. I am in continual engagement with the SAPS and Metro Police regarding the issue and I urge members of the public to open a case,” said councillor Shaun Ryley.
