Train tragedy leaves 15 dead

A horror accident on the North Coast was described by paramedics as the worst case ever attended.

FIFTEEN people were killed when a minibus taxi was struck by a train near Shaka’s Head on Monday afternoon. It’s believed the taxi, which was overloaded, had driven through a stop street before going down an embankment, where it was struck by the train.

KZN EMS spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie, said paramedics also treated five patients who sustained serious injuries.

“KZN EMS paramedics who were on scene say that this is one of the worst cases they have ever attended to and described the scene as ‘absolutely tragic and sad’. “We would like to send our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Words can’t describe the anguish they must be feeling at this time,” he said.

He added that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the crash.
