DSW clears protesters’ mess

Since the early hours of this morning residents of the settlement were up in arms, allegedly, over the Municipality's decision to resurface the roads in the area

CLEAN-up operations have commenced along Effingham Road following the destruction caused by protesters at the Sim Place Informal Settlement this morning.

Since the early hours of this morning, residents of the settlement were up in arms, allegedly over the municipality’s decision to resurface the roads in the area. Reports have suggested that their anger was based on the fact that illegal power connections have been run across the road and the re-tarring of the roads would severely affect their connections.

Traffic along Effingham, Ramchand and Umhlangane Roads has been affected. Protesters blocked the roads with rocks, branches and various burning material.

Durban Solid Waste has responded to the aftermath to clear the rubble and burning remnants.

A shotgun casing was found at the scene during the cleanup, although there were no official reports of the protests turning violent. Facebook users of the Mvoti Neighbourhood page, however, reported hearing gunshots at around 4am this morning.
