Brazen house robbers arrested, stolen goods recovered

Not only were they found to be driving a hijacked vehicle at the time of the arrest, but authorities also discovered various house breaking implements in the vehicle.

A GANG of would-be-house robbers were thwarted last night when they allegedly planned to break into a home in Sunningdale. Not only were they found to be driving a hijacked vehicle at the time of the arrest, but authorities also discovered various house breaking implements in the vehicle.

The four male suspects were spotted in red VW Polo at the corner of Sugarfarm Trail and The Curl. Marshall Security’s Tyron Powel said the vehicle matched the description vehicle that had been used in several house robberies and break-ins, and they decided to pursue the suspects as the car turned onto Sugarfarm Trail.

After several minutes the Polo turned onto Village Way where it eventually slowed down and stopped in front of a complex.

Powell said the men then stepped out of the vehicle, but immediately jumped back into the car and sped off when they spotted the pursuing vehicle pulling up behind them.

A chase ensued. However, it was short lived, as the suspects fled towards the cul-de-sac on Village Way. They were eventually forced to abandon the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

One of the men was arrested by Powell as he jumped out of the Polo, while the second was later arrested near the N2 freeway – after weaving through a complex and servitude. The  two other suspects managed to escape.

“Upon inspecting the vehicle we found ammunition and house breaking implements, such as a crow bar and screwdrivers. It was also later discovered that the plates were false and the vehicle had been hijacked in Montclair in May,” said Powell.

A flat screen television was also found in the car. It had been stolen during a house break-in in Phoenix no more than an hour prior to the arrest. No firearms were found in the vehicle or on the suspects.

The suspects were later handed over to the Duran North SAPS.
