Dumping escalates in Durban North

Tension over the issue has accelerated to a point where a vendor at the circle, Angie Doran, said she has been verbally assaulted when she approached residents dumping at the site.

FOLLOWING the outrage over the escalation of dumping in Red Hill, Durban North residents have also expressed shock and anger over dumping at the Virginia Circle.

In recent months residents have witnessed an increase in rubbish being dumped at the circle, which have been maintained by the volunteers of the Virginia Community Forum as well as the municipality.

Tension over the issue has accelerated to a point where a vendor at the circle, Angie Doran, said she has been verbally assaulted when she approached residents dumping at the site.

Doran, who also lives in the vicinity of the circle, said that she has witnessed people dumping at the circle for years and has become fed up with the irresponsible individuals.

“A lot of community members have dumped at the circle, but in the last while it has escalated. They dump everything from garden refuse to smelly fish. In the summer months it is terrible. I don’t want to work in a dilapidated area,” she said.

She added that it was unacceptable that the public felt that it was their right to dump their rubbish wherever they want.

Fellow resident, Dawn Buckston, said she believes that the area has been deteriorating of late. “People just don’t have respect for their community. Everywhere you look there are piles of black bags with refuse that people have simply dumped on the side of the road,” said the irate resident.

Aggravating the issue even further, said Doran, is the vagrants who strew the litter and rubble from the dumped bags when they rummage through them for recyclable items.

In an attempt to resolve the issue Doran said she has spoken to the vagrants and has taken photos and reported dumping offenders to the authorities, but this has not yielded any resolution.

There are several sites in the Durban North area at which residents can drop-off their refuse:

DSW Garden Refuse Site Redhill on Malacca Road in Redhill
DSW Garden Refuse Site Riverside on Riverside Road in Durban North
Durban North Community Drop-off at the Pick n Pay Hyper by the Sea on Waterkant Road
North Coast Road Buy Back Centre on North Coast Road in Redhill
