Hollywood beckons for Bernelee

NGN talks to local singer about her trip to the World Championships of Performing Arts in the USA later this month.

HOLLYWOOD conjures up images of stardom, the paparazzi, the walk of fame, and the 45-foot iconic sign on top of Mount Lee in Los Angeles. Now a group of local residents are taking their skills to the USA to show South Africa can compete on a world stage. Northglen News recently caught up with uMhlanga resident and singer, Bernelee Frick, who will be representing the country in the 2015 World Championships of Performing Arts.

This is the second time the Crawford College La Lucia pupil will be representing the country at the world champs, and she is raring to go.

Before leaving for the heady heights of California, the 15-year-old will be competing in The Road to Hollywood Talent Showcase at Crawford College on Friday, 26 June.

“The show is about giving local audiences a taste of what we are bringing to Hollywood. We are going to wow them with our individuality and our diversity. I hope the local community will come out and support us. We are all going to make South Africa proud,” an enthusiastic Bernelee said.

The Grade 9 pupil is one of three local residents going to the global showcase, which includes Glen Anil’s Emmitt Cawley and La Lucia’s Jemma van Breda.

“Last year was an amazing experience. I didn’t know what to expect, that was the scariest bit, so it was a bit nerve-wrecking, but I learnt so much. When I got back home I went back to the drawing board and worked on my confidence and other aspects I could improve on.

“I feel more confident going into this year’s competition and I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see what the other countries have in store,” she said.

Bernelee will be competing in six categories at the competition and insists she wouldn’t have been able to get where she is today without the support of her family.

“My mother is the heart and soul behind me. She has been so supportive in my journey and helps me choose songs and dresses. Without her, this would not be possible,” she said.

Road to Hollywood will be a vibrant production showcasing the talent of five of the South African team members who will be competing in the ‘2015 World Championships of Performing Arts’ in Hollywood in July. The event takes place at Crawford College La Lucia on Friday 26 June, (5.30 for 6pm). Tickets are R75 for scholars, and R150 for adults. Contact Deidre Frick for more information 079 045 1100.
