‘Unlicensed’ driver crashes through wall

Residents hit a brick wall after yet another accident in Effingham.

AN Effingham Heights resident is at her wits’ end after a driver, crashed through her neighbour’s wall. The accident was the third in 18 months on Devshi Drive but, according to Dr Nishana Inderjeeth, there have been several close calls and near-misses.

The previous two accidents also involved cars crashing into walls. According to Inderjeeth, the drivers in the previous two incidents were ‘unlicenced’ youngsters. Two schools, Avoca Primary School and Effingham Secondary School, are situated on Devshi Drive, but this has not deterred the drivers.

What’s more, the drivers spin their tyres and race each other on the steep and narrow road; this despite speed humps on the road.

“We’ve made numerous calls to the police and we were told that it is a Metro Police issue, which is nonsense. This accident happened at 11am and my mother, who was at home on the day, said the driver had several near-misses driving up and down the road.

“There are a lot of children walking to and from school, and I worry about my three children, who often play in the yard. When this driver crashed into the wall, he knocked several brick pieces onto my neighbour’s car, which was parked in the yard. I shudder to think what would have happened if one of the pieces of debris had struck a child,” Inderjeeth said.

She added residents were angry that very little had been done to curb the situation.

“The reason we’ve had so many crashes is because this road was not meant for speeding. So many of the drivers who race up and down can’t take the bends at high speed and end up losing control,” she said.

“There is also drag racing on the road during the weekends, but there is very little or no response from the police, despite several complaints by residents. They need to do more and not simply pass the buck.”

Attempts to get hold of Greenwood Park SAPS were unsuccessful.
