Fun fitness to be had at La Lucia’s outdoor gym

Soon, both the fit and unfit members of the community will be able to enjoy the free outdoor gym facility being constructed at the La Lucia Park.

IN an effort to facilitate a healthier city the eThekwini Municipality has begun to erect outdoor gyms within various communities in Durban. Recently the La Lucia community has been added to the long list of areas who will be benefiting from this positive initiative.

Simple, yet effective fitness equipment, that has been designed to withstand the elements, will be installed at the site. Access to the facilities will be free and available to anyone.

Construction has already begun at the La Lucia Park and the facility is expected to be complete within the next two weeks, said ward councillor Heinz de Boer.

De Boer was thrilled that the initiative had been included in the ward. “The project has been well received and used in other areas within Durban, and we hope that it will be just as successful in our community. The park is the perfect spot as it is easily accessible, and with the gym being built in close proximity to the swings, parents will be able to bring their children along for some fresh air. The kiddies can play at the swings, while mum and dad can work out from a safe observable distance,” he said.

The idea behind the programme is not only to cater for people who cannot afford traditional gym fees and memberships, but also to encourage a fit and healthy community.
