Dog humanely euthanised after being hit by a motorbike

A vet had to rush to the scene of an accident yesterday after a dog was knocked over on the busy North Coast Road.

WHEN a dog was critically injured on one of Durban’s busiest roads, North Coast Road yesterday, it took the quick thinking of paramedics to try and save him.

However, his efforts were in vain, as the dog would later be euthanised due to the extent of his injuries

Crisis Medical’s spokesman, Kyle van Reenen, said: “On arrival our ambulance crews attended to the gentleman who had been riding the bike.

“He was treated on scene for soft tissue injuries and later refused hospital treatment after being given a clean bill of health.”

Van Reenen said that once the man had been stabilised they got to work on the dog, which had been covered and left for dead by members of the public.

“Intermediate life support intervention was quickly administered. After obtaining intravenous access, a sedative was administered by Advanced Life Support after telephonic discussion with local vet to calm the dog down as the noisy road was becoming to much for him. After this his leg was splinted and he was calmed and reassured,” said van Reenen.

Soon after a vet arrived and the dog was taken for high care. Van Reenen said at the time of the dog leaving the scene it was in ‘a serious condition’.
