New age crime fighting leads to arrest

The camera surveillance system that the Clarendon Neighbourhood Watch is planning to implement has already led to the arrest of a would-be-thief.

AT it’s infancy stages the camera surveillance system that the Clarendon Neighbourhood Watch is implementing, as a new means of combating crime, has already begun to reap rewards.

Not only has it caught cable thieves in the act, it had also recently led to the arrest of a would-be-thief.

On Wednesday last week Ronald van Rensburg, an active member of the watch, spotted a ‘suspicious’ man walking along Eastview Road on the camera surveillance.

According to Bronwyn Samuels, of the Clarendon Road Neighbourhood Watch, Van Rensburg immediately went to investigate.

“When Ronald went to investigate he spotted the same man in his neighbour’s property. When he confronted the man he claimed that he was the gardener. He allowed Ronald to take a photo of him and only bolted when Ronald went to call the home owner. He jumped over multiple fences in an attempt to escape,” she said.

However, the luck had run out for the nimble intruder, as the police had already been called to assist.

With assistance from the neighbourhood watch members police were able to track the man and arrest him on Edgeley Road.

“Our adrenalin was pumping. It was exciting and incredibly satisfying to prevent a crime from actually occurring. It was also nice to see the community come together. We had a few members patrolling until he was arrested. It just shows that this system can work,”said Samuels.
