CPF Nite Run to assist xenophobia victims

A last-minute decision has been made to use the popular Autumn Nite Run, taking place tonight, as a venue to drop off items to help desperate foreign nationals.

FOLLOWING the ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreigners around Durban, the organisers of the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF have decided to use this evening’s Autumn Nite Run at the Crusaders Sports Club as a platform to collect items to help refugees.

CPF member, Andrew Wood, said the series was a community event and it was hoped that it could be used to make a change to the current situation, which has left thousands homeless and fearing for their lives.

“The Red Cross will also be in attendance to receive donations. I hope residents support this great cause and support the Nite Run. We as a community can make so much change,” he said.

uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, said the country faces a serious crisis at the moment.

“These xenophobic attacks are serious, and are a mix of criminality, mob mentality and hatred. Let’s put nationality and race aside and consider that there are humans, people suffering at the hands of South Africans. We as citizens need to prove that we are not part of the mob. That we are responsible, sympathetic and reasonable people. Not far away from us the Greenwood Park Hall houses several hundred refugees. They will be relocated to Phoenix soon.

“I appeal to you for donations of food, clothes, baby formula and other items such as sanitary essentials for ladies and nappies. These donations will help restore a little dignity to those who have been so badly treated. Several NGO organisations have also intervened, and will distribute the donations in the actual refugee camps. I am able and willing to collect any donations,” de Boer said.

Both councillors will be available for the collection of goods. Contact Cllr Heinz De Boer on 083 355 2343 or Cllr Shaun Ryley on 083 974 3500.

Donations can also be made directly to Red Cross, whose offices are at 201 Northway (at the intersection with Umhlanga Rocks Drive).
