Driver fires gun during M4 road rage incident

Victim was shot twice in the stomach and once in the face with pellet gun.

A MAN was arrested and charged with assault after a road rage incident turned violent last week. The enraged man pulled out a pellet gun and allegedly fired at the victim several times. The incident occurred on 4 April on the M4 near the Fairway pedestrian bridge.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the victim was shot twice in the stomach and once in the face.

“It’s unclear what started the altercation, but the duo pulled off on the side of the road. It’s alleged one of the drivers then pulled out a pellet gun and began firing almost at point blank range. He was later arrested and charged with assault GBH (grievous bodily harm).

Deokaran urged motorists not to react to provocation and to stay away from erratic drivers.

“As motorists we all have a responsibility and numerous opportunities to cool the emotional temperature on the roads,” he said.

“You must realise that you can’t control another driver’s behavior, but you can control your own. When another driver cuts you off, how you react will determine what happens next. If you are able to back off, take a deep breath and remain calm, then you can defuse a potentially violent situation.”
