Sunningdale SPAR reopens after explosive morning
Minimal damage caused to Sunningdale SPAR says store manager.
THE Kwikspar at the Sunningdale Shopping Centre has reopened following the discovery of undetonated explosives on the premises this morning. It is believed the suspects entered the supermarket through the roof and had removed tiles to gain access to the premises. The suspects then ripped out the alarm system and wired a type of liquid explosive to the safe.
Police remain tight lipped on the explosives found at the scene and would not comment to Northglen News.
Sunningdale Kwikspar manager, Donovan (he did not want to give his surname), said the suspects had caused minimal damage to the store.
“They damaged a little of the roof panelling, but there wasn’t any major damages to the store. The police were dealing with a sensitive issue and took every precaution to keep everybody safe,” he said.
He would not comment on the cost of the damages to the store.
According to Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell, the suspects may be linked to other safe and ATM bombings in the greater Durban area.
“At this stage we are still unsure whether the suspects were disturbed by patrol officers who responded to the scene of the break-in or whether the explosives used didn’t work,” Powell said.
