Panga used in Japanese Gardens robbery

Japanese Gardens robberies leave Durban North SAPS worried.

A RELAXING day out in the Japanese Gardens in Durban North turned into a nightmare for three men who were held up by two armed men on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at about 10am.

It’s believed the men were near the bottom of the gardens, where more than half of the armed incidents have taken place, when they were confronted by two men armed with a panga and a knife.

“The armed suspects approached the men and saw they were alone. They then threatened the trio and demanded their valuables,” explained Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS. “The suspects stripped the men of their cell phones and watches and calmly walked away. Luckily no one was injured in the incident.”

This is now the eleventh armed robbery at the gardens since March last year.

Doekaran added all of the previous robberies were committed by knife-wielding men.

“We are concerned about the frequency of the robberies and we will be stepping up patrols in the area. I also urge residents and visitors going to the gardens to stick to the more populated areas,” he said.

The robbery follows the assault and stabbing of a man at the gardens in January.
