Humphrey’s ‘paw’fect gift to the SPCA

uMhlanga's celebrity pooch, Humphrey, raises R60 000 for the Durban & Coast SPCA.

HUMPHREY the dog captures the hearts of all who meet him and in recent years has become somewhat of a local celebrity in uMhlanga village. His workday starts at 8am every Thursday when the uMhlanga Medisport Pharmacy open its doors. He trots to the top of the stairs near the skin care section and immediately sets about winning the hearts and minds of all and sundry.

The rescue dog is more than just a pretty face though, he has raised R60 000 for the SPCA in recent years, R30 000 last year alone and is still keen to help out his fellow pooches at the SPCA. What’s more, because of Humphrey’s contributions the SPCA has been able to feed 100 dogs for the past two years, which works out to R2 500 per month contribution to the non profit organisation.

His owner and best friend, Alwyn Immerman, said the funds raised are used to buy Montego dog food for the animals at the Durban & Coast SPCA.

“He’s got an aura about him and his mournful look just wins people over. Humphrey has a sign saying ‘Humphrey cares for his lost and lonely friends’ with a little poster explaining his story and he does a fantastic job as in fundraising. It feels absolutely wonderful to be able to give back to an organisation that helped me find my best friend and who help others find their forever homes,” Alwyn said.

“Humphrey has become such a star attraction that customers come in specifically on a Thursday just to see him and donate to the SPCA.”

The celebrity pooch also has a Facebook page (Humphrey Immerman) and has even got a speciality drink called the Humphreychino at the coffee shop, where R5 from every cup goes towards the cause.
