Rotarians lend helping hand in clean up

Rotary Club of Umhlanga members clean up at La Lucia Library.

COLUMIST Max Du Preez’s resignation last week sent shock waves throughout the country, but it also sparked an idea in Rotary Club of uMhlanga member, Clive Hull’s mind.

After writing in the complaints book at La Lucia Library about the surrounding litter that had not been picked up for a few months, Hull said he was was moved into action by Max du Preez’s article.

“He said we should stop complaining and do it ourselves. He also said, ‘The poor management and planning, deployment of loyal cadres not up to the job, attempts at state capture, corruption and weak political leadership of the last decades are now really adding up and taking their toll. There are no signs that matters will improve in 2015.’

“He advocates we take our own action in, for example, fixing potholes, getting our own water tanks, buying generators and getting a good education for our children.

“So last week two fellow Rotarians, Veronica and Clive Raaff, and I went down to the La Lucia Mall, and in three quarters of an hour filled up four black bags with litter.”
Hull added the difference was remarkable.

“Of course the grass and weeds are still as high as an elephant’s eye, but maybe we should allow the ‘new contractor’ time to get things going after the Christmas break. The head librarian, Andy, thanked us for our support and said the outside bin had been stolen recently.

She invited us to join the Friends of the Library group,” Hull said.

“Next to the library is a very busy municipal clinic, and some of the items we picked up were swabs of cotton wool, which could be a severe health hazard. The clinic is staffed by some very hard working nurses, and the sister in charge welcomed our intervention and promised to focus on better control of their patients.”
