Couple assaulted and robbed on Broadway

Armed men target couple during evening stroll.

A LOCAL couple’s New Year’s eve stroll was abruptly halted by armed men who assaulted and robbed them of their valuables. The incident occurred at about 8.35pm on Swapo (Broadway) Road on 31 December. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, three men in a blue Opel Astra approached the couple under the auspices of looking for directions.

“The men pretended they were looking for a home in the area and the good Samaritan decided to phone for directions. One of the suspects then struck him on the back of the head with a weapon and yanked the cellphone out of his hand. His accomplices then grabbed the woman’s handbag before jumping into the getaway vehicle,” he said.

Deokaran added though the robbery was an isolated incident, there had been a string of armed robberies, specifically targeting pedestrians in January and February of last year.

“I urge residents to walk in bigger groups wherever possible and to stick to well-lit and well populated areas. Muggers are far less likely to target people when there are others around or they are likely to be seen,” he explained.

No arrests have yet been made.
