City issues warning for New Year fireworks

eThekwini Municipality has issued a warning to residents to abide by by-laws pertaining to fireworks for New Year.

DURBAN skies will be converted, albeit briefly, into a fountain of colour as thousands of visitors and locals celebrate the start of a New Year in spectacular fashion by lighting fireworks and showcasing fireworks displays around the City.

While fireworks are associated with celebration and festivities, eThekwini Municipality is urging residents and holiday-makers to act responsibly and celebrate within the ambits of the law. Residents are reminded to abide by the by-laws and exercise caution when lighting fireworks. The use of fireworks is only permitted for half an hour from 31 December 2014 at 11.45pm to 1 January 2015 at 12.15pm.

Here are some safety tips to ensure you have a memorable and safe celebration.

•The use of fireworks should always be done under the supervision of an adult.

•Animals must be looked after. Call your nearest SPCA or Veterinarian for advice.

•Do not place any body part directly over a fireworks devise when lighting the fuse.

•Allow fireworks to complete their burning. Ensure that the flame is completely doused by pouring water on it before discarding it into the bin.

• Do not detonate a fuse whilst aiming at a person or animal.

•Do not carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them off in a metal or glass container.

•Light one fireworks device at a time and move away quickly.

•Do not try to re-light or pick up fireworks if they have not ignited fully.

Mayor of eThekwini James Nxumalo, wishes all visitors and local residents a joyous and prosperous New Year. “This festive season has once again proven that our City is indeed Africa’s leading tourist destination. We are happy our visitors and local residents have co-operated with our officials and Law Enforcement Agencies. As we cross over into 2015, we encourage our patrons to do so in a safe and responsible manner so we can start the New Year refreshed and full of energy,” said Nxumalo.
