Drunken youth arrested in roadblock

The roadblock took place on the M4 (northbound) just before the uMhlanga off-ramp.

A 19-year-old youth was among nine other motorists arrested by the Durban North SAPS in a road block on the M4 on Saturday night. Not only was the teenager unlicensed but he was also over the limit and had taken his father’s car without his knowledge.

The roadblock started at 7pm on Saturday evening and ended at 4am on Sunday morning and occurred just before the uMhlanga off-ramp. The roadblock follows a similar one, also held on the M4 last month which saw 14 drivers arrested.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said the intoxicated Phoenix resident had just picked up his girlfriend and was driving her home when he was nabbed.

“He was over the limit, driving without a license and admitted his father did not know that he had taken his car,”  he explained.

Deokaran, added they had similar cases in this period last year with matriculants or young drivers taking their parent’s cars without their knowledge or permission.

“This was irresponsible and reckless. To have drivers taking a chance on the road like this is extremely worrying. Unfortunately, he won’t be the last. We want to remind everyone that getting behind the wheel drunk is a terrible idea,” he said.

Deokaran added there would be no leeway for errant drivers.

“There is a zero tolerance policy for drunk driving, you will be arrested and you will be fined,” he concluded.
