How to deal with embarrassing Facebook photos

Have you ever logged onto Facebook and noticed a friend had tagged you in an embarrassing photo? Or has anyone ever posted a photo maliciously? Here you can find tips on handling the issue.

WE have all heard the cliché, ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’… Well that saying hasn’t rung true since the advent of social media.

Today cell phones and social media have enabled anyone to upload and share photos from anywhere in the world, and generally once those photos are online they are there to stay.

In a recent study 29 per cent of Facebook users admitted that their friends have posted and tagged them in embarrassing photos on the popular social networking site. And, while one’s friends might naively think these photos are harmless fun they are gravely mistaken. These photos can ruin a person’s life.

Not only does it set them up as a target for public humiliation and ridicule, but it could also impact the person’s future or current job prospects. Approximately 10 per cent of teenagers have been victimized after unflattering photos were posted of them online.

More concerning is the fact that some photos are published with malicious intent. A recent study conducted by McAfee revealed that one in ten ex-partners have threatened to disseminate private and intimate photos with other, and 60 per cent of those threats have been carried out.

What actions can you take once an unflattering photo has been published without one’s consent?

– Open the photo in Facebook, select the ‘options’ tab and them select ‘remove tag’, to remove the photo from your profile. if the photo has been posted maliciously you can also click ‘report photo’.

– Ask your friend to remove the photo from Facebook.

– Users can also send an email to info@support.facebook.com.

– If the person is unwilling to remove the photo from Facebook one can also submit a complaint via the Facebook Property Infringement Form.

– Or submit a complaint via the Facebook Terms Violation Reporting Form.
