AUTHORITIES believe that the three men involved in the high speed police chase yesterday, were planning to commit an armed robbery, before they were spotted by police.

Tyron Powell, of Marshall Security, confirmed that two firearms, a police scanner, bullet proof vests and balaclavas were found in the suspects’ vehicle (Audi A3). “All of these items are typical of an armed robbery. There were no house-breaking implements, such as a crowbar, found at the scene. Thus, we do not believe that they were planning to commit a house robbery,” he said.

It was also confirmed that the third suspect hijacked a woman in her property on Chelsea Drive, as she was approaching her vehicle. “The suspect had fled into a property along Kenneth Kaunda Road and had jumped over several fences before he reached  the victim’s yard. He blind-sighted her as she was walking towards her car,” he said.

Powell said the suspect was not armed, but shouted frantically at the victim as he demanded her keys. He jumped into the vehicle and even waited for the property gate to open, but when he felt that the gate wasn’t moving fast enough he rammed through the gate and fled the scene.

The vehicle was later abandoned and recovered in KwaMashu, but the third suspect remains at large.

Yesterday a high speed chase ensued after police spotted three suspicious men in Beachway. The chase turned violent just outside three popular Durban North Schools; Chelsea Preparatory, Headway and Our Lady of Fatima on Northway (Kenneth Kaunda Road) when the trio opened fire on police.

However, their efforts were in vain and authorities arrested two of the men, when they attempted to flee on foot.
