High end uMhlanga golf shop robbed

The robbery of a golf shop in uMhlanga has prompted its owner to undertake lie detector tests on all his employees.

A HIGH end golf shop on Meridian Drive was robbed of R200 000 in goods and computers at about 6pm last night, just minutes after it had closed. It’s believed four men in a black car drove into the newly built business complex robbed the store and then allegedly tried to run over a security guard who tried to stop the robbery.

Grant Poppesqou, owner of The Golfers World said he suspected the robbery was “an inside job”. All of his employees are currently undergoing lie detector tests.

“I got a phone call just after 6pm to tell me my alarm had gone off and that I’d been robbed. These guys were in and out in about four minutes and seemed to know what to take. They took two golf monitor systems valued at R55 000 which had  been imported. They even had time to rush upstairs and steal another computer from my sister’s office.

“It’s an absolute nightmare. My big orders start now and I’ve now got to process transactions manually. It’s a huge frustration. They also swiped my tills but luckily all that was there was the float. I’m not sure what other stock is missing,” he said.

It’s believed the men used a crowbar to pop open the door. Poppesqou said he was angry at what he said was “lax security” that allowed the robbers to get in.When the Northglen News arrived on the scene of the robbery this morning we found that the door had been slightly bent allowing the intruders to open the door with ease.

“Every day, we are the last shop to leave and once we do, the gates of the complex are meant to be closed. But they weren’t and these guys were able to drive in and drive out again,” he said.

Jenny Ludick, centre manager, of the complex said they were worried. “This is the third incident. We cannot understand how they managed to get in because the gates are locked at 5.30pm, we never open the roller gate and we have 24-hour security and electric fencing,” she said.

Police are currently investigating.
