Police raid suspected Durban North brothel

An early morning swoop by police on a Durban North business premises lead to the arrest of 17 people.

THREE men and 14 women were arrested by police after a raid on a brothel in Durban North early on Friday morning. The women, who police said were ‘suspected to be from Thailand’, were also arrested and are being detained at the Greenwood Park Police Station. Two of the men are beleived to have been customers while the third man is believed to be behind the running of a brothel and human trafficking syndicate.

According to W/O Lutchman Singh, spokesman for the station, the house was situated on Grosvenor Crescent in Greenwood Park and had been under observation for several months.

uMhlanga councillor Heinz de Boer congratulated the police on the bust saying it would be the first of many in the area.

“Brothels and prostitution is a huge problem in the Durban North and Umhlanga area. It rivals Point Road in that respect. Businesses operating under the guise of massage parlours and escort agencies will be investigated. There are other raids planned for the areas with the hope of eradicating this kind of illicit businesses,” de Boer said.

Earlier this year a suspected brothel operating out of Prestondale was shut down by police who arrested two women, including one who they allege was the ‘madam’. Police believe that the rented house situated on the quiet Maple Close was at the centre of a massive sex ring.
