Arty exhibits for Mount Edgecombe

Four artist's breathtaking artwork will be on display at the The Green Gallery in the Flanders Mall, Mount Edgecombe in October.

FOUR KwaZulu-Natal women artists will share the spotlight at the next exhibition in The Green Gallery in the Flanders Mall, Mount Edgecombe, opening on Thursday 2 October. The four artists are Sharleen Boaden; Coral Spencer; Kirsty Hall and Lieze Meyer. This exhibition marks the sixth anniversary of the gallery which was established in 2008.

The Green Gallery was started by sisters Sarah Lawrence and Maureen Dixon at Flanders Mall Mount Edgecombe. Sarah and Maureen have a long history in the art world: Sarah having owned a gallery in Zimbabwe and Maureen is an artist working together with the Watercolour Society of SA and other art initiatives.

The gallery offers an eclectic collection featuring both established and up and coming artists. Among the artists whose work is regularly exhibited at the gallery are Kim Donaldson, Rob Domijan, Barbara Siedle, Coral Spencer, Heather Slater, Shirley Brandon, Sue Kemp, Anton Benzon, John Smith, Marion Townsend, Makiwa Mutomba and of course the artists featured in this exhibition.

Pietermaritzburg born Sharleen Boaden is a fabulous impressionist who strives to capture the emotive quality in the subjects she portrays and draws the viewer in with the essence of the subject rather than by painting replicas of real life. Coral Spencer, born in Durban and schooled in America, has a keen interest in body language and relationships between people which she plays out in placement of figures in her captivating paintings. “I paint light and the human figure in its landscape.”

Kirsty Hall finds inspiration in nature and her love for birds is clearly evident in her perfect portrayal of them in her paintings. She says that she sells her paintings to raise money for food and care for creatures great and small.

Lieze Meyer works with a minimal colour palette. Her paintings are monochromatic and have a compelling calmness about them. She creates images that evoke a sense of understanding of the subjects she selects.

The exhibition runs from Thursday, 2 October until Monday, 13 October 2014.
