Local petrol stations targeted in car jamming incidents

DURBAN North SAPS has warned residents of a recent spike in car jamming incidents in the area.  Even seemingly crowded parking lots and public areas are no deterrent for increasingly brazen criminals who can empty a parked vehicle of its valuables in a matter of seconds

“We believe a remote jamming syndicate is operating at the moment and with the festive season around the corner, this type of crime is likely to increase,” Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station said.

Last week six cases were reported of theft out of motor vehicles. However criminals are not just targeting shopping centres, Deokaran warned, they are also targeting local garages

“Three of the cases reported last week occurred at a Glenashley and uMhlanga petrol station. The criminals know they have a short window of opportunity as you run in to buy a few items. However, invariably residents may leave their cellphones or other valuables in the car. Items such as laptops, iPads, cameras, GPS’, external hard drives, perfumes and cash are what the suspects most often look for.

“I urge residents to double-check they have locked their cars and not to leave valuables in their cars,” he said.

Deokaran also cautioned residents to report any suspicious activity.
