Grisly discoveries made at Bridgevale clean-up

Residents made some chilling discoveries at the Bridgevale Valley cleanup on Saturday.

SEVERAL chilling discoveries were made by Durban North residents after they rallied in an effort to clean the Bridgevale Valley on Saturday, 6 September.

More than 50 residents, who sacrificed their morning to support the clean-up, were left rattled after a grisly makeshift weapon and a decapitated monkey was found amongst the rubble and vegetation. The weapon was entrusted to Marshall Security patrollers on site.

It is believed that vagrants are a primary cause of the mess, as well as inconsiderate residents who dump garden refuse over their walls. The parks department was called in and one resident was fined R300. Residents have been warned that more fines will be issued.

Residents who participated in the clean-up were also outraged by that fact that the majority of the rubble collected at the site was recyclable, such as paper, glass and plastic. “If people bothered to recycle the rubbish would not end up here,” said one irate resident.

The clean-up was initiated in an effort to combat the ever increasing piles of trash scattered across the otherwise tranquil and scenic valley. After hours of tireless dedication four trucks of garbage was removed from the site.

Ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, was thrilled with the turnout and hopes to facilitate regular clean-ups within Durban North.

“In an ideal scenario we hope to move from park to park and to conduct similar clean-ups on a regular basis. There are a lot of open spaces in Durban North that needs attention. By conducting regular clean-ups, we can encourage activity in the park, which will chase away undesirables, and ultimately enable us to take back our parks,” he said.
