uMhlanga shootout leaves one injured

Three men were arrested after opening fire on police using an AK47.

CHAOS reigned on Umhlanga Rocks Drive this morning, as a high-speed chase led to an intense shoot-out between police and a trio of suspects. The men who were allegedly armed with a pistol and an AK47 assault rifle, were waiting in a charcoal grey Hyundai I20 outside the Standard Bank near Gateway when they were spotted by an unmarked police vehicle.

The suspects then lost control of their vehicle, rode up onto the pavement, puncturing two tyres and smashing into a tree at the traffic circle at the intersection of Armstrong Avenue and Umhlanga Rocks Drive.  One of the suspects was shot in the arm and was being treated by paramedics when Northglen News arrived on scene.

The officers who were on a routine patrol in the area noticed the suspicious looking men as they tried to drive away nonchalantly. The registration of the vehicle was checked and police found the car had been hijacked in Sydneham last month.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, police were trying to trace whether the men were wanted for any other crimes.
