Accused cop waits to take the stand

The man accused of shooting a mother of one in Durban North two weeks ago is about to make his bail application.

METRO cop, Devon Govender accused of killing 32-year-old Rosemary Bell on 19 August is peeping into the packed courtroom of Magistrate Vanitha Armu. He is being held in the cells of the Durban Magistrate’s Court ahead of his formal bail application. Govender is wearing a navy check shirt and black pants.

Greenwood Park SAPS said that the cop said in an official statement that they were just about to have dinner when Bell, who he said knew how to handle a firearm, took his service pistol from him.

“According to the Metro officer, Rosemary Bell started playing with the gun, but when the officer tried to take the gun back from her it went off and shot her in the stomach,” said Lt Elvis Naidoo, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS.

The Metro cop who is about to make his bail application is being represented by top attorney Sunil Singh.
