Wedding revellers behind hotel assault

Police use CCTV footage to identify the men two days after the assault.

THE four men that police believe are behind the brutal assault and attempted murder of a Riverside Hotel security guard have been arrested. The men were attending a wedding at the plush hotel and according to police falsely claimed their car had been broken into.

When the security guard inspected the car he found nothing amiss. Police allege that the four men who hail from Morningside, Chatsworth and Pietermaritzburg beat up the security guard. One of the men stands accused of pulling out a firearm and shooting at the guard four times. The security guard managed to escape unscathed.

“The security guard fled the parking lot in fear of his life. We believe the men were drunk and that is what sparked the assault. We have recovered three spent cartridges,” he said.

The men, Neil Govender, Rowen Govender, Nathaniel Patchappa and Shakeel Mohammed appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court and have been remanded in custody.

Police used CCTV footage to identify the men two days after the incident that occurred on Sunday, 3 August. They also managed to trace the registration of one of the vehicles which led to their arrest.
