M5.3 earthquake hits Gauteng

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake was a magnitude 5.3 quake when it hit Gauteng.

ACCORDING to the US Geological Survey (USGS) the tremor that was felt around Durban an hour ago was caused as a result of the M5.3 earthquake that hit Gauteng six kilometers east of Orkney at 12.22pm today.

The tremor was felt as far Durban North and surrounding areas. USGS reported that the earthquake happened at 10.22am at the epicenter at a depth of 10km.

Social media went crazy with the news of the earthquake.

  • Shane Oosthuizen said: “I’m feeling very left out that I didn’t feel the earth tremor.”
  • Joanne Eve Taylor, who lives in Johannesburg, wrote: “OMG!!!! I was in the toilet and apparently the only person who didn’t feel a thing!”
  • Annie Moodley said: “Did anyone feel that tremor…”
  • Monique De Villiers Delport wroe: “So I am sitting at my desk. Having had a headache all morning I just returned to my desk where I took two Grandpa powders and literally felt the ground moving! Thought I was about to faint until a colleague walked by and I said do you feel that… my desk was wobbling… definitely an earth tremor!”
  • Natasha Singh from Johannesburg wrote: “Just experienced my first earth tremor. It was like something out of Jurassic Park. I was sitting at my desk, felt it and the bottle of water next to me started shaking.”

  2. I was also sitting @ my desk when I felt it another work collegue Priyan comes in and ask if we felt it but I guess we we’re the only two lucky ones that felt it….
