Illegal parkers beware, QASA is on the lookout

The Quad Para Association of South Africa has had enough of people parking illegally in wheelchair zones.

DISABLED parking abusers, beware! The Quad Para Association of South Africa (QASA) has had enough.

QASA has taken to social media to urge people to send in photos of people who illegally park in wheelchair parking bays. “It is our request that only wheelchair users make use of the wheelchair demarcated parking space.

There is a simple reason for this. The wheelchair parking bays are generally 3500 mm wide, which allows extra space for a wheelchair on either side of the vehicle,” said chief executive officer of QASA, Ari Seirlis.

He said so often the parking spaces were abused by able-bodied people who feel they have a disability, enough to want the benefit of the close location rather than needing the width.

“In our opinion this is abuse. It is not to save anybody a few metres. It is to ensure that we have adequate space for embarking and disembarking, with a wheelchair,” Seirlis said.

Seirlis said QASA encourages the public to send a photograph of the offending vehicle with the vehicle registration and hopefully the wheelchair parking sign in the background to verify that the vehicle is in the wrong place, giving QASA details of the location and time: “We will then follow up with the offender.”

To alert QASA, send a message to the QASA WhatsApp line on 073 853 9675.
